For thousands of years, slavery has been the never ending discussion of the human kind. It was then defined as the human being owned or a property of another to do all man’s bidding, literally from forced labor to possession, buying and selling, liberation as well as disposal when deemed necessary by his owner. It is barbaric and tyrannical if I may say. Slavery is dated back to 1760BC according to the Code of Hammurabi, but what do we know, others would claim otherwise. I personally would say it began from the early man and woman, as to when exactly I am not accurate. The Bible would say man was created at the beginning of God’s creation, though Science believers would say otherwise with hundreds of theories out there to prove their claim. Where did it all began is another query. All I could tell you is that it existed in many cultures.
To believe in one’s decree is one’s choice reckoning on his personal beliefs. It isn’t my pursuit to convince you as to when it all began but what came next.
It has been proclaimed that we are free men. But are we, really? My discerning is rather deviating from some of you. My theorem is we never really broke away from slavery. We just revitalize the term to a more awfully cultivated term that justifies our whims. The existence of needs and wants has been used interchangeably to legitimize people’s caprice and fancy notion. I used to think basic needs are limited to food, clothes and shelter. Nowadays, the pyramid has dramatically changed.
This is just one of the many assertions of what we have become. Our needs have change. Ironically, the fundamentals of freedom haven’t. There’s freedom of choice, of expression and life choices. The doctrine of freedom asserts free will, liberties and rights, as well as political, intellectual, economic freedom alongside moral responsibility.
We have had proclaimed we are free! Yet our actions, our way of life and thoughts and expressions says otherwise. Human beings are constantly absorbed with the latest technology, doting on power and control, as well as ridiculously dependent on vogue and frivolity. These are just few of the much enslavement we dug ourselves in. We allow the modern civilization products chain us and the shackles keep tightening. Hence, we have no choice but to adopt. And unknowingly, we even cultivate these caprices and profess them as sound principles. It’s preposterous. Nonetheless, over time they become essentials as how people would look at it or define it. I peruse it as no other than enslavement to worldly greed and hankering.
It is no surprising that the world is into weaponry, defensive tactics, economy disasters, race wars, ecological destruction, global climate change, terrorist attacks and viral pandemic. Humans are irrational, demoralize and mislead as a result of our longings that have dominated us all our lives. If we can’t break free from all of these, then slavery from centuries ago hasn’t exactly disappeared. Until then, we are still in chains.
